The video tells the story here.
I didn't manage to capture the worst of it - it went on for several minutes - but this short clip is an indication of what happened, and what happens frequently to one poor critter or other.
As a viewer, I would probably ask "why didn't you do something to stop it?". As a bystander, I was about 80 metres away, as the crow flies, but about 600 metres away to reach on foot. I also know that in this country, animal cruelty is something that the majority of the population consider 'fair sport' even if they do not carry out the act. So, as the 'cameraman', I wanted to record the moment and publicise the problem.
Here, there are few ways to prevent people from committing cruel acts or punishing them after the act. They, and 'they' includes the police, just laugh at you. It seems there is no moral distinction between swatting a fly, kicking a cat or a group of kids breaking a seagull's wing with a stick. How about we try to reduce abuse with publicity and shame?
This post is specifically about the prick who beat the dog however the bigger picture is serving up the attitude of some nations tolerance of animal abuse. They don't seem to want to move out of the Middle Ages on issues such as this.
